Did you know that since the early years of settlement the hills people have constructed golf courses on which to play.
The first course was constructed in Darlington in 1923 by a group of residents . As stated in A Place in the Hills by Trea Wiltshire “there were a lot of professional people – doctors, solicitors and architects – living in Darlington at the time , and by their own labour they turned the area into a very good little golf course”
There was a tin shed used for the clubhouse and the ladies would bring along afternoon teas and it became quite a social event.
The club closed in the 1940s and the land was later subdivided in the area bordered by Coulston Road and Saw Drive.
A golf course was started in 1957 on land north of Mundaring Weir that was originally owned by Walter Jecks. Later purchased by the Jacoby Brothers who named it Portagabra . By 1963 the Jacoby Park Golf Club boasted more than a hundred members . The original Jecks homestead was used as the clubhouse. The fairways were called “tiger country” as it was a very challenging uneven ground with long grass, bracken and a deep creek to negotiate.
In 1969 both the bowling club that was where the ambulance station is now and the golf club joined forces and a new club was constructed at Mundaring Oval. It is called Mundaring Sporting Club.
Bowls and golf are not the only game now played on these courses, there is a newer sport called Disc Golf. It is played with a disc shaped item and hit into wire baskets set around a course. Later this year an international event of Disc Golf will be played at the Mundaring Sporting Club from Wednesday the 6th to Saturday the 9th November.
